#17 Kenny McKie 1984 - 1994
Playing Participant in the Legends of Peterborough event March 16th 2008
Having started out with the Glasgow Dynamoes, Kenny McKie made his name in the early 80s with Premier League side Nottingham Panthers where he played alongside future Peterborough team mates Kenny MacDonald and Tim Peacock.
At the start of the 1984/85 season, Kenny joined the Lawless/Jutras/Hope inspired Pirates side that went on to win the Division One championship in style and, in doing so, putting Peterborough hockey on the map. In a three-import era, it was very much the British players that set aside the top clubs from the rest and the 28+22 return from Kenny’s 20 league games was hugely instrumental in keeping Pirates just ahead of their bitter rivals from Solihull.
Kenny continued to rack up big points in all of his subsequent seasons, including the two that culminated in visits to the Heineken Championship Finals at Wembley Arena in the early 90s.
Kenny was one of the game’s true characters, known and respected all over the country but particularly loved by his adopted home town fans here in Peterborough. He played the game with huge energy, with a swashbuckling style, usually with the trademark Kenny McKie smile but always with a great passion that endeared him to the fans.
In 1993, Peterborough hockey faced it’s darkest hour when the rink was closed and partially demolished. The rink-less team struggled on with a very short bench of unpaid players and, in October, faced a daunting trip up to Edinburgh with barely two lines of players. Kenny McKie was back home and in retirement at this point but, when asked, never hesitated to lace them up again to help keep Peterborough hockey alive. That was the measure of Kenny McKie …… a hugely popular player and a genuine legend of Peterborough hockey. |
