Dwayne Newman 2000 - 2001, 2007 - 2008
Playing Participant in the Legends of Peterborough event March 16th 2008
Dwayne came to the UK in 1996 after achieving the title of “iron man” in the WHL where he played 311 consecutive games. His career started with Basingstoke, moved to Telford for two seasons and then returned to Basingstoke before arriving in Peterborough at the start of the 2000/01 season.
Dwayne had already established a reputation as a tough, uncomplicated but uncompromising stay-at-home defenceman and he rapidly developed a popularity with Peterborough fans for his heroic rearguard efforts, typified by his rather alarming habit of throwing his body in front of slapshots in order to block the puck …… a move that nearly cost him his eye-sight later in the season !
A popular returnee in the 2001/02 season, Dwayne’s time in Peterborough was cut short by yet another financial crisis that forced him to leave for pastures new at Milton Keynes where five consecutive seasons saw him establish a cult status and huge popularity with the local fans.
Despite his time in Milton Keynes, Dwayne had always been Peterborough based and his eventual return to Phantoms this season was as inevitable as it was hugely popular with Peterborough fans. Now 36, Dwayne has taken little time to pick up where he left off all those years ago and remains one of the very best defencemen ever to play in Peterborough.
