Todd Bidner 1986 - 1990, 1999 - 2000
Playing Participant in the Legends of Peterborough event March 16th 2008
The signing of Todd Bidner for the 1986/87 season was big news. Todd had a pedigree as long as your arm, including twelve appearances and a 2+1 return for the NHL’s Washington Capitals. The previous season had seen Todd arrive on the UK scene where he racked up an impressive 71+52 return from 31 games with the Fife Flyers.
The 6’ 2”, 205lb power-forward was a hugely imposing figure in his debut season and, backed by the not inconsiderable talents of Garry Unger and Doug McEwen, his return of 118+146 for 264 points from 45 games not surprisingly powered Pirates to a comfortable league championship win.
Todd delivered two more big point scoring seasons with Pirates before moving on to Telford Tigers midway through the 1989/90 season. He remained a popular contributor to UK hockey over the next five seasons with the likes of Nottingham, Bracknell, Humberside, Telford (again) and Teeside and even pulled on the GB shirt for a 1+1 return from four World Championship Team GB appearances.
After returning to Canada, a 38 year old Todd Bidner made an unexpected but welcomed return to Pirates beleaguered and financially crippled play-off side for the 1999/2000 season and, despite being decidedly rusty, still added 2+1 to his impressive career stats.
One of the most popular and recognizable players to wear the Pirates shirt, it will be great to see the big man back on Peterborough ice.
